The Last Five Years Sneak Peek

Still from the film found at IMDB

If you know me at all, you know I'm a huge musical theatre fan and The Last Five Years is one of my favorites. This Off-Broadway Jason Robert Brown musical chronicles 5 years of a failed relationship entirely through song--the female and male telling the story from different perspectives.  I've been a bit skeptical of the idea of it as a movie (especially since the musical only has two characters, but the movie seems to have a lot of them), but I'm still excited to see it--especially with Anna Kendrick as Cathy. If it has most of the original music, it'll make you feel all the feels, especially if you've had a failed serious relationship.

EW recently released a sneak peek of the film, which is due out on Valentine's. The clip they picked is totally random, but it still makes me a little excited. I've included the film clip here and the entire song from the musical below it. Showing a song in the middle is very strange, especially as a sneak peek...but whatever.

  1. I saw this teaser the other day. I'm a big fan of the show but am a bit unsure about this... What do you think? Not sure if the acting or singing is quite up to standard. Which I hate to say as I love Anna Kendrick but it's just not doing it for me. I hope to be proven wrong!

    1. I think it was a really weird teaser to release, don't you? And like a weird section of the song even. I'm hoping the movie will be better, but I'm not sure. The play is so stylistic that I can't really imagine it translating well to a film, but I guess we'll see.

  • I actually don't mind Anna as Cathy, though, but I see what you mean.

  • I was lucky enough to see it on Monday and I loved it so much that I couldn't wait to show my mom and boyfriend, but when I saw the clip they chose, I thought it was a little odd. Like, do I really want to introduce them to it with this clip? Probably not.

I can assure you the movie is excellent, though! The movie adds a lot of really great movement and flow that the play tends to lack (e.g. lots of sitting still and singing to the audience). Speaking of sitting still, it really works when they do implement it, and Anna almost made me cry within the first few minutes of the movie with her rendition of Still Hurting, which she performs perfectly still. The live singing is absolutely impeccable and Anna and Jeremy have great chemistry. I can't wait to get my hands on this soundtrack! I truly do prefer it over the other two versions.

    1. Thank you for writing this! It makes me feel a little bit better about it as a film. I do like Jeremy and I think he'll make a great Jamie, but that clip is SO weird. I can't wait to see it, though!
